What is a passport?

A passport is a form of identification issued by a government. A passport is issued for the purpose of international travel, specifically to grant a person access into another country, often dependent on intra-country relations. Passports are used to record international travel, serve as a universal form of identification and as a placeholder for other travel documents such as visas.

The U.S. federal government issues passports only to its citizens. A U.S. passport is coveted as the U.S. holds good status with many countries, giving its citizens the ability to travel relatively freely. As the U.S. has embassies and consulates in many foreign nations, passport-holding citizens have access to their services and are offered protection abroad.
